Why professional cleaning
Even with good brushing, a hard layer called tartar (calculus) builds up on teeth, especially behind the lower front teeth and along the gum line. Tartar can't be removed with a toothbrush.
Tartar holds bacteria that cause swollen, bleeding gums and bad breath. Left alone, it can lead to gum disease and loose teeth.
What happens during cleaning
- Scaling: we gently remove tartar from above and just below the gum line.
- Polishing: we smooth the tooth surfaces and remove surface stains from tea, coffee or tobacco.
- Advice: we show you the spots that need more attention when brushing and flossing.
Signs you need a cleaning
Bleeding while brushing, bad breath that doesn't go away, yellow or brown deposits near the gums, or if your last cleaning was more than six months ago.
Common questions
Does cleaning damage the enamel?
No. Scaling removes deposits sitting on the tooth. It does not remove enamel.
Will my teeth feel sensitive afterwards?
Some people feel mild sensitivity for a day or two, especially if there was a lot of tartar. It settles on its own.
